Oto jak wygląda „praca” analityka, gdy zamiast słownika bierze on do ręki linę.
- Niebezpieczeństwo: Jest to niezwykle delikatna konfiguracja przetrwalnikowa. Musi on zajmować pozycję czystej reszty obiektowej (obiektu a), pozwalając pierścieniom pacjenta ślizgać się wokół niego do momentu, aż pacjent zdoła wykuć swoje własne, trwałe rozwiązanie.
Zarządzanie cięciami (Szwy i manipulacja)
(Rebus)
do stanu:
Bibliografia i lektury uzupełniające
Lacan, Jacques – Seminarium, Księga XIV: Logika fantazmatu (1966-1967)
When we abandon the early Lacanian model of the analyst as a cryptographer decoding a linguistic rebus, the analyst's job description changes completely. From a topological perspective, the analyst is a rigger, a structural engineer, or a master weaver.
The analyst's room is no longer a place where truth is dug up from the past; it is a workshop where a highly fragile, failing topology is repaired in real-time. Here is what the analyst's "job" looks like when wielding the rope instead of the dictionary.
Acting as a Temporary Structural Ring (The Analyst-as-Sinthome)
When a analysand enters analysis, their original three-ring knot (Real, Symbolic, Imaginary) is often slipping, ready to unravel.
- What the analyst does: The analyst temporarily offers their own presence—specifically their structural consistency—to act as an artificial placeholder ring. By entering the transference, the analyst loops themselves through the patient's collapsing rings to temporarily steady the structure.
- The danger: This is a delicate holding pattern. If the analyst acts too much like a "person" (the Imaginary) or a "master" (the Symbolic), they will distort the patient's delicate architecture. They must occupy the place of pure object-residue (objet a), allowing the patient's rings to slide around them until the patient can forge their own permanent solution.
Managing the Cuts (Suture and Manipulation)
We considered earlier whether introducing the Sinthome requires a cut. In the clinic, the analyst must handle topological cuts with extreme precision, functioning in two opposing ways depending on the structure:
For the Neurotic: Cutting the False Knots
Neurotics come to analysis tightly bound up in a suffocating, imaginary knot of meaning (Sens). They have woven a massive, defensive web of narratives ("I am miserable because my mother did X...").
- The Job: Here, the analyst's famous short session or sharp intervention acts as a scissors. By cutting the linear flow of speech or disrupting the narrative, the analyst punctures the imaginary balloon, separating the heavy weight of the signifier from the actual, raw piece of the Real it was masking.
For the Psychotic/Borderline: Avoiding the Cut at All Costs
If a patient has a fragile, unknotted structure where the rings are barely touching, a classic interpretation ("What you really mean by that is...") can be catastrophic. It can slice right through their fragile defenses.
- The Job: Here, the analyst drops the scissors and picks up the needle. The job is suture (recouvrement). The analyst helps the patient find a stable patch, a specific delusion, or an artistic practice that can serve as a makeshift aunt home (Sinthome) to tie down their loose reality.
Guiding the Shift from "Interpretation" to "Savoir-Faire"
The ultimate goal of a topological analysis is to usher the patient into a state of savoir-faire—knowing how to handle, manipulate, and live with their unique knot.
While in early Lacan the goal is decipher the unconscious ("Where Id was, there Ego shall be"), the late Lacan goal no shifts to manipulating the knot ("Know-how with your Sinthome").
The analyst’s job is to stop trying to "cure" the symptom. Instead, they guide the subject to realize that their symptom is the very thing holding them together. The analyst helps the patient transition from:
"Why do I have this bizarre, unreadable pathology?" (The Rebus)
to...
"This is the precise way I am wired, and this is how I must weave it to survive." (The Knot)
The analyst doesn't untie the knot to set the patient free; they help the patient make sure the knot is tied securely enough that they can finally walk out of the clinic and live.
Bibliography & Further Reading
Freud, Sigmund – The Interpretation of Dreams (1900)
- Focus: Chapter VI ("The Dream-Work"). This is where Freud explicitly defines the dream as a rebus (Bilderrätsel). Reading this text is essential to see exactly what Lacan is targeting in his "return to Freud."
Lacan, Jacques – "The Instance of the Letter in the Unconscious, or Reason Since Freud" (1957) [in:] Écrits.
- Focus: A core text on metaphor, metonymy, and the Saussurean algorithm (S/s). It defines how signifiers chain together, leaving objet a as an elusive, metonymic remainder.
Lacan, Jacques – The Seminar of Jacques Lacan, Book XI: The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis (1964)
- Focus: Essential for understanding the early formulation of objet a as the cause of desire and a structural lack, right before Lacan begins to formalize it geometrically.
Lacan, Jacques – The Seminar of Jacques Lacan, Book XIV: The Logic of Fantasy (1966-1967)
- Focus: A crucial text for understanding the use of the cross-cap and the Möbius strip. It demonstrates mathematically how the cut splits the surface into the barred subject ($) and objet a.
Lacan, Jacques – "Lituraterre" (1971) [in:] Autres Écrits.
- Focus: This text bridges the gap between the two periods. Lacan shifts his focus from the signifier to the letter, defining the letter not as a tool for meaning, but as an inscription or "erosion" in the Real.
Lacan, Jacques – Seminars XXI (Les non-dupes errent), XXII (R.S.I.), and XXIII (Le Sinthome) (1973-1976)
- Focus: The late topological phase. This is where the rings of the knot are flattened into Möbius strips, the concept of the Sinthome is introduced as a corrective fourth ring, and the wedging of objet a at the center becomes the critical condition for maintaining the subject's psychic consistency.
