"Boskie Buenos" / "Divine Buenos" by Maanam

[scroll down for the English version]

English: The inspiration for the original lyrics to this song was the book titled "Para comerte major," a prominent 1968 novel by Argentine author Eduardo Gudiño Kieffer. The title roughly translates to "To Eat You Better." It was never officially published in English and does not have a standard English translation.  The book's title is a well-known, dark play on the classic fairy tale phrase from Little Red Riding Hood ("All the better to eat you with!"). In the novel, the line is used as a critique of consumer society, middle-class values, and the predatory nature of modern societal norms. The story is a psychological and social critique that explores human desires, greed, and societal decay. It is widely regarded as one of Gudiño Kieffer's breakthrough works and a standout piece in Argentine literature. Although the song's lyrics were based on an Argentine book, communist censorship looked for a hidden meaning in them. The vision of escaping to a distant, exotic Buenos Aires, drinking champagne, and buying expensive clothes was suspiciously bourgeois and Western to the officials. The song only survived because Kora defended it as a purely literary, surrealist acting creation. Check out: [English translation of the song’s original lyrics is available here].

Mój tekst alternatywny "Drag" / My alternative "Drag Queen" lyrics:

Polish
Serdecznie Witam, panie podglądaczu
Zanim pokażę panu swoje ciało
Nazywam się Krzysiek Lichtanski
Albo może, Stara Dama
z Kamienicy.

Chce jeszcze raz pojechać do Europy
Lub jeszcze dalej do Wrocławia
Bo tam zobaczyć można w kabarecie
burleskę. Burleska jest Boska!

A kiedy dali mi zielona kartę
I wysłali mnie do Ameryki
Tam dawali mi wciąż kredyty
I ja teraz już jestem
Zbankrutowany.

Chce jeszcze raz pojechać do Europy
Lub jeszcze dalej do Wrocławia
Bo tam zobaczyć można w kabarecie
burleskę. Burleska jest Boska!

English
A very warm welcome, Mr. Peeping Tom,
Before I show you my body and soul,
My name is Krzysiek Lichtanski,
Or perhaps, The Old Lady
From the Tenement House.

I want to go to Europe once again,
Or even further - to Wroclaw's neon light,
Because there in the cabaret, you can see,
Burlesque. Burlesque is Divine!

And when they did give me that green card,
And shipped me off to America’s shore,
They just kept giving me credit lines,
And now look at me...
I’m totally bankrupt!

You’re still staring at me through the window pane,
Inspecting my silhouette, judging my hair,
You’re wondering, where on earth did it come from -
Such a massive wig on top of my head?

So when it comes to this wig of mine,
Or maybe to you, standing out in the chill,
I don’t know why you’re still loitering there -
Come on, I'm just a guy in a wig!

But meanwhile, I’ve got to turn out the lights,
Before the utility bill gets too high,
Or it won’t be possible anymore,
To survive right here in this tenement house.

I want to go to Europe once again,
Or even further - to Wroclaw's neon light,
Because there in the cabaret, you can see,
Burlesque. Burlesque is Divine!
