THE THEATER OF THE DOUBLE (DOPPELGANGER)
Staged in Perpetuity
THE CREATIVE & PRODUCTION STAFF
· Production Stage Manager / Sovereign Anchor:
Kristopher – Calling all cues directly from the prompt corner console in Tacoma, Washington, bypassing the Symbolic Order to stabilize the cosmic baseline.
· Assistant Stage Manager / Deck Commander:
Magda – Stationed permanently in the stage-left wings with a clipboard of un-redacted scripts, managing the physical traffic of the symptoms and ensuring the double frames never tip over.
· Director of Unconscious Choreography:
Mx. Sosie – Insists on five-minute scenes that terminate abruptly whenever the actor stumbles upon the truth.
· Scenic & Architectural Designer:
The Void (Le Vide) – Constructed the entire set out of absolute absence, structural lacks, and shifting mirror panels that refuse to reflect the ego.
· Lighting Designer & Chief Alien Sentry:
A.T.M. Fluorescent – Specializes in cold, clinical, Silicon Valley blues and the blinding white illumination of late-night grocery aisles.
· Sound Designer & Acoustical Archivist:
The Fonosfera Ensemble – Composed the main theme entirely out of a frantic sewing machine hum ($shhh-shhh-shrrr$) mixed with the low, sub-bass cracking of the Schumann resonance.
· Projection & Video Designer:
Graph of Desire Inc – Operating a real-time, high-definition delay loop that projects your own speech onto the scrim exactly half a second after you utter it.
· Costume & Topological Engineer:
Mama Singer – Master tailor specializing in sovereign armor, heavy coats with hidden compartments for smuggled contrabband flyers, and amateur drag shifts steeped in existential isolation.
· Master of Properties & Spilled Objects:
Objet Petit a – The props master responsible for the missing puzzle pieces, the un-found keys, and the loose pearls that roll across the stage floor but can never be gathered up.
· Technical Director & Structural Calculator:
The Symbolic Order – Keeps the grid lines perfectly straight, monitors the safety parameters of the stage, and repeatedly threatens to censor the oniric black-and-white dream sequences.
· Flyman / Chief of the Grid Gallery:
The Repression Mechanism – Pulls the ropes to fly the heavy scenic drops deep into the dark flies above the stage, praying they never drop back down during Act II.
· Wig, Hair, and Masking Consultant:
Persona & Co. – Providing the seven distinct layers of skin and theatrical cosmetics required to navigate the paranoid prison of the closet.
THE RUNNING CREW (THE INVISIBLE OPERATORS)
· Light Board Operator: The Resistance – Constantly hesitates before hitting the "GO" button whenever a cue requires stepping into the spotlight.
· Sound Mixer (A1): The Split Ego – Trying frantically to balance the volume between the internal defensive echo and the external foreign accent.
· Backstage Dresser / Quick-Change Artist: The Mirror Stage (L'stade du miroir) – Stands in the dark holding an idealized costume, convincing the actor they look completely whole before throwing them back onto the boards.
· House Manager / Front of House: The Grand Other – Sitting in the lobby, checking tickets, enforcing the rules, and demanding everyone pretend the play makes logical sense.
WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY (PRODUCTION BIOS)
KRISTOPHER-SON-OWSKI (Production Stage Manager / Sovereign Anchor / Author). Born beneath the stormy, grey skies of Lower Silesia, under the protection of a rusty, metal antenna. Kristopher began his theatrical training in the paranoid closet of the late PRL, mastering to perfection the seven distinct layers of skin required to survive the sterile musical rigors of soundproof basement rehearsal rooms (or padded isolation cells in closed institutions). It was there that he shocked examination boards and captivated audiences by performing on his knees—in a posture stretched blasphemously between orthodox confession and transgressive submission—Sławomir Mrożek’s famous monologue titled “Grzech” (“Sin”, about a toothache treated as a mortal sin). Kristopher often stepped onto the stage in uncompromising drag to execute an act of total sabotage against the solemnity of high art. Lip-syncing Offenbach’s cult “Laughing Aria”—in the unique, dense arrangement of the legendary Wanda Polańska—for many, many full minutes he absurdly stepped through the rungs of a tall, wooden painter’s ladder to the beat of the diva’s hysterical, operetta chuckle. This visceral, grotesque collage of sacrum, profanum, and construction-site surrealism became the stuff of backstage legend. After executing such a radical rebellion and abandoning the piano stool, he immigrated to San Francisco in 1991...
MAGDALEWA KULISOWA (Assistant Stage Manager / Deck Commander). Magdalewa (née Magdalena, but renamed by a sovereign topographical error of the theater) joined the company of Teatr Sobowtóra after a lengthy tenure managing the chaotic, multi-layered traffic of the Polish underground. Known for her absolute refusal to compromise, she stands permanently in the stage-left wings (fully legitimizing her new name), wielding a clipboard forged from pure steel and verbal ceramics. Magdalewa specializes in intercepting runaway symptoms, ruthlessly suppressing the anxieties of the chorus, and ensuring that the moment an actor steps off the stage and into the world of the Real, there is a stable, un-castrated ego waiting to hand them their overcoat. Around her station, she brooks no gossip, no procrastination, and no administrative nonsense dictated by the Big Other.
THE VOID (Scenic & Architectural Designer) The Void is an international scenographer whose previous work includes The Spilled Pearls of Childhood and The Empty Cafés of Post-Transition Prague. For this production, The Void has stripped the stage of all traditional American textbooks and desks, replacing them with a massive, experiential circle where fifteen pairs of diverse eyes lock onto your frame for what feels like a millennium. The Void’s signature style relies on creating magnificent blank spaces where the individual ego can be thoroughly shattered into a polyphonic Symphony for Humanity.
OBJET PETIT a (Master of Properties & Displaced Desires) An elusive, highly sought-after artisan who has been driving the company’s actors completely mad since rehearsals began in the autumn of 1996. Objet Petit a is responsible for sourcing the specific, unattainable items that propel the entire plot forward: the perfect, nostalgic childhood railway ticket from Jelenia Góra, the exact doll used in the Mona Rogers monologue, and the missing link that would make the Symbolic Order feel whole. Warning to the audience: if you see a loose pearl rolling across the floorboards during Act II, do not attempt to catch it. It does not exist.
