Malowany płot

ENG Version: The Painted Fence

When he was twenty years old, he said:

"Not just yet. First, I have to paint the fence."

The fence was old and wooden. It required two coats of paint. Then a third, because the rain washed away the second.

By the time he finished, winter had arrived.

In the spring, the wood cracked.

He painted again.

And so the years passed.

Friends would go to the seaside. He stayed behind. Someone would invite him to a concert. He refused. Children wanted to play ball with him. He would say:

"When I finish painting the fence."

His wife would suggest a walk.

"After the painting."

He dreamed of a train journey across Europe.

"Someday."

Of learning to play the piano.

"Later."

Of writing a book.

"When there is time."

But there was never any time.

There was only the fence.

When he turned fifty, he bought a new house.

He renovated the roof, the walls, the windows.

The fence was left for last.

He stood in the July heat with a paintbrush in his hand. Paint ran down the boards, sweat down his face. Behind the fence, people laughed. Someone was riding a bike. Children ran past with ice cream. In the evening, the neighbors sat around drinking wine.

He didn't have time.

He painted.

Late at night, he put down the brush.

He looked on with pride.

Perfect.

For the first time in many years, he thought:

"Tomorrow, I'll start living."

Towards morning, he went outside with a mug of coffee.

On the fresh paint, someone had written in big capital letters:

"LIFE IS ON THE OTHER SIDE."

He sighed.

He went to get some sandpaper.

In the afternoon, he drove to buy new paint.

A few years later, he sold the house.

He bought a bigger one.

It was beautiful.

It had an even longer fence.

People said he was lucky. Increasingly nicer houses, better and better paints, sturdier and sturdier boards.

Nobody noticed that he had never walked through the gate.

His whole life, he lived on the wrong side of his own fence.

Kiedy miał dwadzieścia lat, powiedział:

– Jeszcze nie teraz. Najpierw muszę pomalować płot.

Płot był stary, drewniany. Wymagał dwóch warstw farby. Potem trzeciej, bo deszcz zmył drugą.

Kiedy skończył, przyszła zima.

Na wiosnę drewno popękało.

Znów malował.

Tak mijały lata.

Przyjaciele wyjeżdżali nad morze. On zostawał. Ktoś zapraszał go na koncert. Odmawiał. Dzieci chciały z nim pograć w piłkę. Mówił:

– Jak skończę malować płot.

Żona proponowała spacer.

– Po malowaniu.

Marzył o podróży pociągiem przez Europę.

– Kiedyś.

O nauczeniu się gry na fortepianie.

– Później.

O napisaniu książki.

– Jak będzie czas.

Ale czasu nigdy nie było. Był tylko płot.

Kiedy skończył pięćdziesiąt lat, kupił nowy dom.

Wyremontował dach, ściany, okna.

Na końcu został płot.

Stał w lipcowym upale z pędzlem w dłoni. Farba spływała po deskach, pot po twarzy. Za płotem śmiali się ludzie. Ktoś jechał na rowerze. Dzieci biegały z lodami. Wieczorem sąsiedzi siedzieli przy winie.

On nie miał czasu.

Malował.

Późno w nocy odłożył pędzel.

Spojrzał z dumą.

Idealnie.

Pierwszy raz od wielu lat pomyślał:

– Jutro zacznę żyć.

Nad ranem wyszedł z kubkiem kawy.

Na świeżej farbie ktoś napisał wielkimi literami:

„ŻYCIE JEST PO DRUGIEJ STRONIE.”

Westchnął.

Poszedł po papier ścierny.

Po południu pojechał kupić nową farbę.

Kilka lat później sprzedał dom.

Kupił większy.

Był piękny.

Miał jeszcze dłuższy płot.

Ludzie mówili, że miał szczęście. Coraz ładniejsze domy, coraz lepsze farby, coraz solidniejsze deski.

Nikt nie zauważył, że nigdy nie przeszedł przez furtkę.

Całe życie mieszkał po niewłaściwej stronie własnego płotu....
